  1. Do you use real rose petals?
We use premium quality silk rose petals - better than even wedding quality. Compare our rose petals to anyone else and you will find the quality is the equivalent of 5 times the expense of standard silk rose petals. They are so key to the experience and yet we can offer them to our customers at such a large discount simply because we use so many premium quality silk rose petals.

We used to also offer freeze dried rose petals from Columbia or Ecuador, but those petals, when re-hydrated, were difficult to maintain the correct moisture content.

  2. What are freeze dried rose petals?
Our vendors start by working with importers to bring in the best roses available from Colombia and Ecuador.  They then cut and hold the roses until they open just right.  Once they are ready, they pull the petals off one by one, separating the imperfect petals from the premium ones.  The petals are then cooled and loaded into a freeze drier.

The rose petals typically spend about 2 weeks in a freeze drier.  They are first frozen to about -20 degrees Fahrenheit, then a vacuum pump draws all the air out of the chamber to a very low pressure.  This extreme condition allows the water contained within the petals to pass directly from a solid (ice) to a gas (water vapor), a process called sublimation.  Since they bypass the liquid stage of water, the petal can remain in the shape it is frozen in without shriveling or decomposing.  The temperature is gradually increased to about room temperature over two weeks, allowing all of the water contained within the petals to be removed.

Freeze dried petals can then last for several months if stored correctly, instead of a few hours like petals right off the rose.  The freeze dried petals are re-hydrated before each shipment, bringing you beautiful and soft petals to enjoy.  They won't stain like fresh petals, and have the soft feel just like a real petal without having to resort to the unromantic alternative of silk "petals".

  3. Do freeze-dried rose petals stain?
No.  We use freeze-dried rose petals for that very reason.  However, if you wet the petals, there is a possibility of staining.  Using both a top cover-sheet and freeze-dried rose petals ensures that your comforter and sheets beneath will not be damaged.  Fresh petals are much more prone to staining, which is why many wedding locations do not allow fresh petals.  Nevertheless, we do request that our customers release Überoom from responsibility of any damages resulting from rose petal staining.
